Cybershite

Rise Of The CybermenOn the right. Hideous monstrosity, on the left. Comparable perfection. These are the new Cybermen that I just saw desicrate my TV. I hate them, and I hate you for bringing them to me and spoiling my eyes and ear and... fuck!

Tp6You know what? They look cooler than most of the old Cybermen, but I'm going to even prefer the cloth faced twats over these metal idiots after the shit that I just had to sit through. Fucking diabolically written trash, designed to take an old foe and de-fang them.

Tomb1Why the fuck bother to continue 40 years of continuity, if you're going to ignore it. I'd rather have seen the crap 80's Cybermen return than these terrible "DELETE" shouting mother fuckers. I mean alternate worlds? That's fucking cheap mate. It's nasty. It's the worst plot device ever. Even Star Trek avoided it where it could.

Cybermen-1WORSE! It seems this is based on the Big Finish play "Spare Parts", which is AWESOME. This is not. That is call defiling, and you should just go and rape someone, rather than destroying someone else's work. I wonder if it's a good thing that they credit the author of Spare Parts with some of the story. I wonder if he is embarrassed by it. I would be.

CybermenI am going to hunt Russell T. Davis down and make him do terrible normal things until annoying lisps disappear. Twat.

Kids turn "teen repellent" sound into teacher-proof ringtone

I love this story. Children are GENIUS.

Found here: Kids turn "teen repellent" sound into teacher-proof ringtone:

Cory Doctorow:

Kids in the UK have co-opted an annoying noise sold to retailers as teenager-repellent and turned it into a ringtone.

Mosquito is a high-pitched sound "audible only to teenagers" sold by Britain's Compound Security. It is sold to shopkeepers to use as a teenager repellent -- the idea is to play it loudly in and around shops and "chase away those annoying teenagers!!!"

The kids have reportedly converted the high-pitched noise and turned it into a ringtone, which, being inaudible to grownups, can then be used to receive texts and calls in class without alerting teachers.

This is either a magnificent hoax or just plain magnificent -- either way, I love this Little Brother Watches Back parable.

Schoolchildren have recorded the sound, which they named Teen Buzz, and spread it from phone to phone via text messages and Bluetooth technology.

Now they can receive calls and texts during lessons without teachers having the faintest idea what is going on.

A secondary school teacher in Cardiff said: 'All the kids were laughing about something, but I didn't know what. They know phones must be turned off during school. They could all hear somebody's phone ringing but I couldn't hear a thing.

Make your own Quake Papercraft

I made mine. Couldn't get them to print properly, but it was still fun! You should try it-

AMD Socket AM2, Athlon 64 FX-62

I hear they are the best... these are the puppies I'd want powering my ultimate-mega-rig of doom!

AMD finally moves to DDR 2, but was the wait worthwhile?

Review Today, AMD is launching two major new products: its Socket AM2 interconnect and a faster Athlon 64 FX to go with it. A little bit later on today we'll see Nvidia's new nForce 500 series of chipsets, but let's start with AMD, as this is really its day and not Nvidia's - no matter how important a partner it is. Besides, Nvidia's new toys have a later NDA, ahem. For AMD, the year's biggest open secret has become official: it's supporting DDR 2 SDRAM...…

MyVu LCD goggles for iPod reviewed

I need me some of this action-

Found here: MyVu LCD goggles for iPod reviewed:

We know not everyone is down with the idea of wearing goggles like the myvu to watch a movie or video, but it seems there are some people that like them, as evidinced by this very positive review from Mobility Site. They found the myvu to pretty much deliver on what it promises, with a watchable video image, long battery life (over six hours), and a comfortable design. Of course, people's definition of acceptable video quality will no doubt vary; the myvu just gives you iPod-native 320x240 resolution. And, as you can probably guess, while it's marketed towards the iPod video, it'll work with just about any video source. You'll have to decide if the $270 price tag is worth it to rock it Geordi LaForge-style.

The Elephant Revisited

This was an amazing experiance-

Found here: The Elephant Revisited:

trunk_envy.jpg

We think we're safe in saying that no one was really prepared for the spectacle of The Sultan's Elephant. How a lumbering beast of that size managed to take Londoners by surprise and then melt their cynical hearts is a mystery right up until you first see it move. When was the last time you saw so many grown ups outrunning the kids to get a glimpse of something magical?

Discussions of the Elephant and his companion are still going on, Flickr is awash with images of the pair and our own footage has now had more than 10,000 views.

Good on BBC4 then for having the gumption to get a documentary about the visitors on our screens so quickly:

Documentary tracking the recent free theatre spectacle of a 40-foot articulated elephant, containing a sultan and his harem, weaving through the streets of central London. The mechanical wonder, weighing 40 tons, was created by theatrical magicians, Royal de Luxe. What sort of reaction will the moving show get from Londoners and tourists alike? Award-winning film-maker Chris Terrill follows the elephant's trail.

It screens on Thursday, 18 May, at 7:10pm.

We were there. It was pretty special. Chec flickr for photos.

First gesture-based XBLA title still in the dark

Sweet-

Found here: First gesture-based XBLA title still in the dark:

I was pretty eager to get my hands, or rather my flapping arms, on Totem Balls, the first  Xbox Live Arcade title to make use of the 360 camera for gesture-based gameplay. Totem Balls has a tropical island theme. You control a little a totem pole-looking character by moving your arms up and down at your sides (a motion that resembles the funky chicken) as he collect balls that balance on his head. Unfortunately, it turns out the still-unpriced Xbox 360 camera has the same studio-like light requirements as the Sony EyeToy, making the game basically unplayable in the dim, romantic glow of the Xbox Live Arcade booth -- much to the chagrin of the Microsoft staff on hand. Despite keeping the gaming press in the dark until the emergency floodlights arrive, they claim it's a superior product.

Windows Vista is bad news for bad boys

Not too sure if I am interested-

Found here: Windows Vista is bad news for bad boys:

During a quick tour of the Windows Vista game features, our guide briefly demonstrated a feature of Windows Vista that's bad news for bad little boys. Parents will be able to block access to the computer during certain hours of the day on certain days of the week, as shown in the screenshot above (note: this is not a final version of the interface). As advocates of responsible parenting, we like to see software that gives parents tools that help them feel that gaming is something controllable, not a threat to proper upbringing.

With Vista, parents will have more control over their kids' computer use, but there are a few holes in the system's design:

  1. Kids often learn more about computer management than parents. They'll probably be the "administrators" of the computer, in most households. Too few parents realize that technical savvy is a prerequisite of good parenting in this internet age.

  2. The controls lack per-application granularity. As shown in this interface, blocking the computer for an hour blocks use of the entire computer. All a cunning child needs to do is claim that he's going to work on a book report to gain access to the computer, then swap over to a recreational activity once mom and dad stop watching. This control should be specified per application that is installed.

  3. The controls lack seasonality. Parents might want to specify different lock-out hours during the summer months (when they feel kids should be outside, perhaps), and they might want to specify, say, full access every other Friday.

There's no easy solution. Adding such granularity would increase the complexity of the system, and that complexity would turn some users away.

Hands on with the Xbox 360 Live Vision, Wireless Headset, and Racing Wheel

The headset is what I'm interested in:

Found here: Hands on with the Xbox 360 Live Vision, Wireless Headset, and Racing Wheel:

Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD drive wasn't the only device we checked out at their post-press conference exposé. We also got to take a look at the Live Vision, Wireless Headset, Racing Wheel and Wireless Gaming Receiver up close and in person. Unfortunately for us, we were told these were all hand-built product mockups that apparently wouldn't withstand the wear and tear of a thousand or more press and partners manhandlings with chubby greasy party hands. Well, who cares, we touched the headsets anyway and they felt pretty nice, fairly light, if not a little fragile. Guess that's what we get for playing with the mockups though, right? Click on for more.

Yep, it's the same camera we've been seeing, well, for a long time now.

The Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver didn't get much play at the press conference, but it's a small device you will use to connect any RF wireless Xbox device with your PC (i.e. headset, wireless controller, etc.).

Yeah, don't touch, we get it.

The Racing Wheel is wireless if you use the battery packs, but if you want rumble you have to plug it in. Bummer, man.

This thing clamps it to the desk, obvs.

Frustrating, because we already own two. I'll get over it, it's just annoying when I double up on kit because they don't release the fricken products they should release WHEN THE THING COME OUT.

Microsoft blends platform lines with Live Anywhere

Interesting to us X-Box liver'-

Found here: Microsoft blends platform lines with Live Anywhere:

The latest ambitious endeavor by Microsoft might have "monopoly" written all over it, but we have a feeling they wouldn't want it any other way. Microsoft's new Live Anywhere that they announced at today's E3 keynote takes their Xbox Live concept and extends it to the PC, Windows Mobile and even Java-enabled phones. Whether you're at your PC or rocking a mobile, you'll be able to track your gamer tag, message friends, purchase content for that device or set it to download to another device, and of course compare rankings with your buddies on various gaming titles. Halo isn't going to run so well on your RAZR, so for actual cross platform titles, Microsoft is sticking with XBLA-esque games that can translate easily to different platform, such as Bejeweled. There will, however, be major games that can be played on your Vista PC and Xbox 360. Microsoft is banking heavily on third party support for Live Anywhere, in the form of mobile friendly value-adds for 360 games, and just straight up phone-friendly casual titles. In order to get more support, they're claiming to approach this from a "platform agnostic" (hah!) angle, and after supporting the 360, Windows Vista and Windows Mobile, will move on to Java, S60 and possibly even Palm if they deem it worth their while. Microsoft obviously has the muscle to launch a service like this, and the features they demoed look quite entertaining and welcome, but we'll still be (pleasantly) surprised if they actually manage to pull it off. Keep on reading for screenshots and impressions.

After the keynote we got a personal showing of prototype Live Anywhere functionality, mainly running off of a Windows Mobile device. Here's what we saw.

Teh Gamez. Once again, if you were hoping for some mobile version of Halo or even something like Geometry Wars, you'll be sorely disappointed. With that said, everything looked fairly snazzy, and there is definitely a difference between games supported by the more powerful Windows Mobile and those plain-jane Java phones.

In keeping with its XBLA roots, Live Anywhere allows for trials of games, which are suddenly terminated with a request for payment to purchase the full version. A bit janky, but at least they offer trial versions in the first place.

Be sure to bother MajorNelson with challenges to beat your high score, everybody else seems to.

That Gamercard is looking good.

There's enough platform support here already that it quickly seems like overkill.

Friends and what platform they're on.

Messaging isn't just email, it can include  video, voice, or even game content.

Java version doesn't look too different, but most of the games are different.

Our friendly presenter.

They finished up with a bit of Gamercard trading, which works over IrDA between phones and syncs across all platforms. In this case they showed the Xbox 360 Dashboard show the request, ask for approval, and then update automatically once the request was approved with the other mobile phone. Pretty slick.

But one day...

As if it's not fantastic enough having a huge great elephant wandering around town, very soon we might also get to witness Jack Bauer scurrying around the streets of the capital.

Yes, that's right, Keifer and the rest of the 24...erm...posse are apparently coming to London to film the movie version of the series.

Sutherland told Jonathan Ross that "We'll shoot the film here. We're really excited about it. In the US 24 was slow to catch on but in the UK it was big so Fox stuck with it, so thank you Britain."

No problem Keifer. Now, the way we see it happening is, you have to track down and dismantle a huge mechnical elephant which has gone amok in the city with a nuclear device strapped to its arse...

X3 - Thoughts

A quick one, because I am tired, and it's been a long day.

X3 L200512051032The Last Stand was good. Not excellent, not amazing, just good.

Acting was pretty terrible, but I guess it's hard to identify with goddesses and freaks. The script was worse, and there isn't a great excuse you can have for that, because you've had 40+ years of writing X-Men. Someone can clearly get it right.

What brought it together was the way it deal with the Phoenix saga in a reasonable way. I think I liked the movie because I was so fucking sure that they would fuck it up, it was a pleasure when they didn't.
X3Skipping over, the Phoenix was good. A nice goddess thing happening, without spoiling the story. They deal with the power of professor X in the same way again though. It'd be nice if they could figure out how to actually use him for once. I guess you can't have everything.

Overall enjoyable. Go and see it, I'll have to see it again because, well... it's the X-Men.

And for fucks sake, stay until the end of the credits. If you enjoy a movie, you should always do it as a sign of respect. You should do it no matter what here.
